Argentiere is one of the larger towns in the Chamonix Valley. It is located on the north-eastern end of the valley at an altitude of 1250 meters. Together with Chamonix and Les Houches, Argentiere belongs to the biggest towns in the valley. The town has a pretty active commercial center with many shops along the main street and more commercial establishments around the town square and the road leading up the main church. There are multiple hotels, restaurants, bars, shops, bakeries and a super market. Argentiere also has its own tourist center located on the town square. The Église Saint-Pierre d'Argentière is a beautiful French Catholic church built in the baroque style located in the heart of the village. It is definitely one of the nicest churches in the valley and worth a visit.
On the southern end of Argentiere lies the Grand Montets ski area with the lift station also open in summer. The Glacier d'Argentiere flows right next to the ski area and towards the town of Argentiere. The Aiguilles Rouges natural reserve lies on the northern side above Argentiere with many trails from Argentiere providing access to Lac Blanc and the Grand Balcon Sud. Argentiere is also linked to the other hamlets and towns in the valley through the low altitude Petit Balcon Nord and Petit Balcon Sud. Directly above Argentiere, lies the small hamlet of Le Planet and the Montagne de Peclerey. Argentiere also lies on the cross roads for the trails leading to Vallorcine and to Le Tour. Overall, Argentiere has a fantastic location for exploring the mountain ranges that surround it.
Getting to Argentiere is easy. Argentiere has its own train station which runs between Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Vallorcine and there are multiple bus stops in Argentiere for the busses that serve the entire Chamonix Valley.
