The Notre Dame de la Neige is a small chapel located on an elevated position close to the Emosson Dam and Lac d'Emosson above Finhaut in Switzerland. The chapel was built in 1976 after the construction of the dam. Inside the Emosson valley, which got flooded after the construction of the dam, there used to be a chapel that was built in 1750 in memory of the 120 people that died in a battle that took place there between the Savoyards and the inhabitants of the Trient valley. The battle was for control over the rich pastures and farmlands around the area. Inside the chapel you will notice 12 glass stained windows that represent 12 different mountain flowers. There is an impressive large wooden carving by Franco Pelissier above the entrance. A beautiful sculpture of Mother Mary and Child stands in the little open space before the chapel.
The Notre Dame de la Neige chapel is easy to reach from the large parking lot near the Emosson dam after driving up from Finhaut. As you walk from the parking to the dam there is a road on your left turning upwards and the chapel is there after a little over 100 meters. You can also take the Verticalp furnicular and train from the valley floor at Le Chatelard very near to the border with France.
We got a great suggestion for a loop trail that you can start from the chapel and takes you to the Lac du Vieux Emosson and the Cabane du Vieux Emosson.
