The Église Saint-Michel is the main church of Chamonix located on a slight elevation above the center of town. It sits on a square that also includes the Chamonix Tourist Office and right beside it is the Maison de la Montagne, the home of the Compagnie des Guides. From Place Balmat the beautiful Rue de l'Hotel de Ville runs straight to the church with the big town hall of Chamonix on the right side. Overall, the church and its surrounding streets and buildings are one of the icons of Chamonix and also the finish line of the famous UTMB trail running race. The backdrop of Le Brevent and the Aiguille Rouge just adds the perfect backdrop to it all.
The church has a very rich history dating all the way back to a first church being built in 1119. The church has since been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over with the current structure dating back to 1702. The church was consecrated by the Bishop of Annecy in 1714. Major repairs and renovations took place in 1830, 1840, 1864 and 1952. The main church bell weighs 1500 kilograms and was cast in 1845. In 1979, the building was classified as a historical monument.
