The Lac du Vieux Emosson is a large lake formed by the Vieux Emosson Dam, or old Emosson Dam, at an altitude of 2225 meters high up in the mountains above Vallorcine. The water of the lake is captured by a circle of high peaks that surround the lake including the Cheval Blanc and the Pointe de la Finive. The dam was built in 1955 and holds back between 11.2 to 13.8 million cubic meters of water which dwarves in comparisson to the Lac d'Emosson below it which is formed by the more recent dam which holds back roughly 227 million cubic meters of water. The views from the dam down to the larger lake and beyond are pretty spectacular. The Cabane du Vieux Emosson refuge is located right below the damn, a short walk away.

We got a great loop trail that goes from Lac Emosson to Vieux Emosson. This is the easiest way of getting here.
