Servoz is a town located in between Chamonix and Saint-Gervais-les-Bains on the outer western edge of the Chamonix Valley. On its eastern side is the Montagne de Pormenaz with its lake. On the northern side are the big cliffs of the Passy Natural Reserve. Servoz is more residential and typically draws less of a crowd than the busier tourist towns closer to Chamonix. It has an excellent location enabling you to easily explore the mountains and points of interests of not only the Chamonix valley but also the mountain ranges east from Chamonix.
Servoz itself has a number of interesting sights you can visit. The main church is the Eglise Saint-Loup de Servoz which was built in 1537 making it the oldest church in the Chamonix valley. Not far away from the central church is the very pretty Chapelle Notre Dame du Lac. This little chapel sits on an elevated position above the road and is very striking. Chamonix does not really have any castles that you can visit but the one exception to this rule are the Ruins of Chateau de Saint-Michel. These ruins have a fascinating history and there are information signs at the site of the ruins in both French and English to learn more about the story of the castle. The trail leading up to the ruins is very nice too. Lastly, there is Vieux Servoz, or Old Servoz, which has plenty of old buildings with a rich history and a nice hidden Oratory.
Servoz is also home to the Gorges de la Diosaz. This is a trail following the Diosaz river upstream through pretty dramatic cliffs with bridges mounted on the side of the cliffs. It is a very worthwhile, family friendly activity. You have to pay an entrance fee and the Gorges de la Diosaz are not open year round.
Servoz can easily be reached using the trail that runs between Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Vallorcine. This train services the entire length of the Chamonix Valley. The train station of Servoz is located on the southern end of the town leaving about a 10 minute walk to reach the town center. There are multiple bus stops in Servoz.
